Paper bags more environmental?
i work at a shaw's supermarket, and sometimes these people come in and want paper bags because its more "environmentally friendly". what i guess they don't understand is that to get paper, they have to tare down the f**king tree. how is that going green.
OK, let's look at the "paper v. plastic" dilemma. First of all, the majority of the paper bags generated for supermarkets have a substantial amount of recycled content. Plus, if actually landfilled, they are biodegradable. Plastic, on the other hand, even though recyclable, is not biodegradable, and is petroleum based, not only in manufacture, but also in composition. So, if you want to be truly environmentally friendly, you have to decide which choice you want to make.
See, that's the delimma most people don't want to face. There is no right answer. There is no one good solution. There is no road back to Eden. We've got what we've got, and that's all we got.
Here's something to ponder. The computer you are now using is FULL of hazardous materials. When disposed of improperly, it will leach into the groundwater. What chemicals? Lead (about 5 lbs in your monitor, if you are using a CRT), and silver. Also cadmium (nicad batteries), lithium (lithium-ion batteries), and other metal hydrides. So, are you gonna give up your computer? it is an ecological disaster waiting to happen. As is your old TV (remember, Feb 09, new digital signals. What ya gonna do with the old tube???), your stereo, iPod, iPhone, PS2, PS3, Xbox... The list marches on. ALL electronics are included, and that doesn't take into consideration the petroleum load required to make the casing, keys, cords, cables and packaging materials.
So, the ol' "paper v. plastic" debate seems a little ridiculous, doesn't it.
